Triptych Concert Information
Dear Gregory Chorus Students & Parents,
We are closing in on our highly-anticipated grade-level Triptych Concerts on Wednesday, December 18 in the Gregory East Gym. If you are new to the Gregory music department, our Triptych concerts are combined chorus/band/orchestra performances that are organized by grade level. Here is the schedule for those concerts:
- 6th Grade Triptych (+ Men’s Ensemble) - 12:30pm and 2:00pm. All performing students will perform the same concert twice—parents/guardians with last names A-L are encouraged to attend the 12:30pm performance, while parents/guardians with last names M-Z are encouraged to attend the 2:00pm performance. Visitors to Gregory will need to sign in at the main entrance greeter desk, before proceeding to the East Gym for the performance. Students performing should wear their concert attire to school (*see below for attire requirements). Students must stay at Gregory at the conclusion of the second performance…no dismissals prior to 3:00pm are permitted.
- 7th Grade Triptych (+ Pioneer Fiddlers) - 6:30pm. Students performing should report to the West Gym by 5:45pm.
- 8th Grade Triptych (+ Mixed Vocal Ensemble) - 8:15pm. Students performing should report to the West Gym by 7:30pm.
*Attire for all Triptych concerts is “nice dress clothing” (no gray music polo shirt). Bright, festive colors are encouraged!
Additionally, we are looking to decorate the gym with some poinsettia plants. If you have one or more that you would like to donate, you can drop it off at the main entrance greeter desk anytime prior to Tuesday, December 17. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

8th Grade-Neuqua Open Rehearsal Night - November 12
Attention 8th Grade Chorus Students & Parents!
The Neuqua Valley HS Choral Department will be hosting their annual WildScats and World Voices Open Rehearsal Night at the Neuqua Gold (Freshman) Campus on Tuesday, November 12, from 5:50-7:50pm. This is a terrific opportunity for current 8th grade chorus students at Gregory, Crone, and Scullen Middle Schools to attend and participate in a high school extracurricular choral rehearsal at Neuqua, meet the high school directors Mr. Kellner and Mr. Rimington, and give them a ‘taste’ of what it is like to be in a Neuqua singing group.
Speaking of ‘taste,’ in between rehearsals for WildScats (vocal jazz ensembles) and World Voices (multicultural choir), free pizza and pop will be served to all 8th graders in attendance!
If you are planning on attending, please email Mr. Pfenninger by Friday, November 8 indicating your intent to participate.

Music Department Fundraiser
Dear Gregory Music Families,
The Gregory Middle School Music Department is pleased to announce our Fall Fundraiser. This year we are offering a catalog from The Chip Shoppe that features quality gourmet cookie dough, desserts, breads, soups, appetizers, and other food items. We hope you will appreciate the convenience of catalog shopping and help support our band, orchestra, and chorus students.
The money raised from our annual fundraiser helps to defray the cost of summer music camp for many students each year. We are able to bring in professional musicians to Gregory for Master Classes, recitals, and performances. In addition, we are able to purchase special instruments that enhance our performances throughout the year. We hope that you will find items that may supplement your holiday shopping or may be a treat for your friends or family. You are under no obligation to order from The Chip Shoppe. The Gregory Music Department would gratefully accept donations.
Students will be bringing home a packet of fundraiser materials starting today. All orders must be returned with customer payments by Monday, October 7; no late forms will be accepted after 3:00pm that day. Please be sure that all customer orders and payments are double-checked for accuracy, and sealed in the large white fundraiser envelope. Items will be delivered to Gregory on Wednesday, November 6, and are available for pickup between 3:00-7:00pm.

Important Early Year Information and Reminders
Dear Gregory Students and Parents,
Welcome to Gregory Chorus 2013-14! Please review the following important chorus announcements and reminders:
· Parents – if you have not done so already, please take a minute or two to fill out the following online form (you will need to know your child’s chorus class period to complete this):

It will be the main portal for posting all important information regarding the Gregory Chorus program throughout the year. Also, since it is in 'blog' format, comments are allowed and encouraged!
· The Chorus Uniform Contract/Polo Order Form is due by Thursday, August 29. Families new to the Gregory music program, or students who are looking to purchase a new shirt, will need to enclose their payment of $12 with this form as well. Forms have been distributed to students in all chorus/band/orchestra classes (combo students can order their shirt through band/orchestra class, and do not need to order a separate chorus shirt). Extra forms are available for students to pick up in the chorus room if needed.
· Every chorus student will need to provide the following materials for chorus class:
- Assignment notebook – to be brought daily
- A two-pocket folder (separate from other subject folders); included inside are lined paper and pencil. These materials will reside in a folder cabinet in the chorus room.
- The folder/paper/pencil will be checked in class on Wednesday, September 4.
· Concert Choir, Gregory’s honors-level auditioned treble-voice choir, will be holding auditions on Wednesday, September 4 and Thursday, September 5, after school. All treble-voiced students (girls and unchanged boys) are encouraged to try out! Sign-ups for a 4-minute audition timeslot are posted in the chorus room, but will fill up quickly, so interested students are encouraged to find a time soon. Students will also need to bring in a signed permission slip/participation contract (located in the chorus room) prior to their audition – students will NOT be allowed to audition without the form signed by a parent/guardian. · The Chorus Calendar Acknowledgment Form is due by Friday, September 6. If you need a copy to print and sign, click here. Extracurricular vocal opportunities at Gregory:
Concert Choir is Gregory’s auditioned honors chorus, and is open to any chorus student at Gregory with a treble (i.e. girls or unchanged boys) voice. Repertoire consists of advanced middle school and high school level music from a wide variety of genres and cultures. The group rehearses on Mondays and Fridays before the school day, and performs at various additional events throughout the school year.
Men’s Ensemble is a non-auditioned group open to male singers (changed and unchanged voices) at Gregory. The ensemble’s one weekly rehearsal alternates on a weekly basis between Thursday mornings before school and Wednesdays after school. Rehearsals focus on the special needs of the changing male voice, and students have fun performing a challenging but entertaining repertoire of music from a wide variety of genres.
Mixed Vocal Ensemble is Gregory's co-ed extracurricular ensemble. The goal of the group is to provide an outlet to students in Concert Choir or Men’s Ensemble who want an additional, more pop-oriented performance opportunity. Repertoire will consist of contemporary and classic pop tunes, Broadway medleys, show choir selections, jazz standards, and holiday carols, amongst others. The ensemble will rehearse once a week on an alternating schedule with Men’s Ensemble – Wednesdays after school, then Thursdays before school. Interested students need to be members of either Concert Choir or Men’s Ensemble in order to participate.
The IMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) Music Festival is an additional opportunity for seventh and eighth grade students. The festival is a single daylong activity on November 9 where students work with a special guest clinician in a large choir of over 200 of the best singers from the western suburbs. At the end of the day, a concert is performed for parents, friends, and teachers. Auditions will be held at Yorkville Middle School in Yorkville on October 5. Rehearsals for IMEA will begin in early October, one day per week after school.
In February, IGSMA (Illinois Grade School Music Association) sponsors a Solo and Ensemble Contest. The event is an opportunity for chorus students to perform a solo or small ensemble (duet, trio, etc.) in front of an audience and judge. The judge then works with students on a one-on-one basis, providing feedback about their performance. Students who have participated in the past have enjoyed the experience greatly. Rehearsals will be one day per week after school throughout January and February.
Many students in the Gregory music department use the summer months to attend a performance camp. These summer music camps provide students further enrichment through intensive instruction in music for anywhere from five days to two weeks, depending upon the camp. In addition to our own District 204 Summer Chorus program, others that are highly recommended are ISYM (Illinois Summer Youth Music) at the University of Illinois, and Blue Lake Camp in Michigan. Students who attend a camp are also eligible for a music department scholarship of up to $100 to help defray the costs of camp tuition. More information about scholarship auditions will be conveyed to home as it becomes available.

Honors Chorus Concert at Neuqua - May 28
The final performance of the year for Gregory's auditioned honors chorus, Concert Choir, will take place on Tuesday, May 28, at 7:00pm in the Neuqua Valley High School auditorium. Students are to report to the Neuqua orchestra room at 6:15pm for warm-up and run-through.
Attire for the evening is 'nice dress clothes.'
Joining Gregory's Concert Choir students will be the honors choruses from Crone and Scullen Middle Schools, as well as the Varsity Chamber Singers from Neuqua Valley. It is sure to be an outstanding evening of singing!!

Summer Chorus Camp
Neuqua Valley is fortunate to host one of the District #204 Summer Chorus Camps this coming summer. What a convenient opportunity especially for students entering Grades 6-12 living in and around Neuqua. We hope that students and families are looking to invest in this extremely valuable summer program to continue to improve in music reading, listening, and performance skills in a fun, relaxed environment. Attendance at dress rehearsals is mandatory...students on the Gregory track and field team are expected to attend their musical rehearsal in lieu of any scheduled track meet.

- After each evening performance of the musical, there will be a pizza party for any chorus student who is interested in attending. We are in need of a group of 3-5 parent helpers per night, as well as a lead party chairperson that can coordinate the party setup on both evenings. Please contact me for details if you are able and willing to assist!
- Our annual music department end-of-year celebration at Funway will take place on Friday, May 24. A detailed information sheet was sent home with students two weeks ago. The cost to attend is $10.00. We hope you can join us for a fun evening of roller skating, video games, bowling, mini golf, etc! If you are planning on attending, permission slips are due back by Friday, April 26; NO late slips will be accepted, so be sure to get your slip in on time!
- The members of the Gregory Men's Ensemble and Mixed Ensemble will be performing at the next STARS Breakfast on Tuesday, May 14. Students are to wear nice dress clothing, and report to the Gregory chorus room by 6:40am.
- The annual District 204 Fine Arts Festival will take place on Saturday, May 18. The following choral groups are scheduled to perform:

Monday, February 25 - Concert Choir rehearsal, 6:55-7:45am; and Men's Ensemble rehearsal, 3:10-4:00pm.
Tuesday, February 26 - Mixed Ensemble rehearsal, 6:55-7:45am.
Wednesday, February 27 - WINTER CHORAL CONCERTS:
6:30pm - 6th Grade Chorus, Men's Ensemble, Mixed Ensemble, and Concert Choir. Report time is 5:30pm in the West Gym.
8:00pm - 7th Grade Chorus, 8th Grade Chorus, Men's Ensemble, Mixed Ensemble, and Concert Choir. Report time is 7:15pm in the West Gym.
Parents, we could use your help again! If you would like to volunteer for pre-concert warmup supervision assistance, please let me know if you would like to help and for which report time.
Concert attire is the gray "Gregory Music" polo shirt and black full-length pants/shoes/socks. Please no capris, skirts, etc.
Thursday, February 28 - Concert Choir rehearsal, 3:10-4:00pm (added rehearsal in order to prepare for the district choral festival on Saturday).
Saturday, March 2 - District Choral Festival, 8:15am-12:30pm, Fischer Middle School. Concert Choir will be performing; an informational form was distributed at rehearsal - please return the completed and signed form by Friday, February 15.
(There will be NO Concert
Choir, Men's Ensemble, or Mixed Ensemble rehearsals the weeks of March 4-8 and
March 11-15.)

students with last names A-L, 3:05-5:30pm. Informational packets can be picked
up in the main office, and permission slips with completed conflict
information need to be turned in to Mr. Pfenninger or Mrs. Battle prior to
or at the student's audition. Students will not be permitted to audition
without a completed and signed form.

The Arts' Competitive Advantage
Gregory Chorus Parents:
ARTSpeaks, with financial support from the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation, is sponsoring an event addressing the Arts’ Competitive Advantage on Tuesday, February 5 at 7 P.M., in the Neuqua Valley Gold Building Forum room.
In January, parents of 8th grade students in District 204 will help their children select classes at the high school level that will provide them the very best education. This ARTSpeaks event will affirm the selection of the Arts as an elective during all four years of high school.
Time and again, this community has demonstrated a strong conviction that the Arts are an essential part of a comprehensive education and that the Arts create the competitive advantage for our students.
As a core curricular offering consistent with the mission of District 204, the study of art and music prepares all students to succeed. Our school district board’s goals define 21st Century Skills as the 4 C’s (collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking). These 21st Century Skills are embedded in District 204's art and music curriculum and instructional practices.
Keynote speaker for the ARTSpeaks event is nationally renowned educator, Dr. Peter Boonshaft. Dr.Boonshaft, a professor at Hofstra University in New York and notable author of “Teaching with Passion, Purpose and Promise”, will address how the Arts teach students to develop their passion for life into the career of their dreams.
ArtSpeaks is also pleased to welcome as speakers Dr. Margaret Byrnes and Mr. Jason Dvorak. Dr. Byrnes, a clinical psychologist in private practice, 204 parent, and ARTSpeaks board member, will discuss the role of the Arts in her personal and professional development and address how the Arts are a critical component in health and wellness. Mr. Dvorak, Vice President of OTTR Chronic Care Solutions, will address the impact the Arts have had on his life, including how the Arts brought people back to their high school 20 plus years after graduation to make music together.

Solo and Ensemble Volunteers Needed
Dear Pioneer Music Families,
Gregory is co-hosting Solo and Ensemble with Crone Middle School this year on Saturday, February 23. Crone has offered to provide the site, room monitors, hospitality and greeters for the day. We are in charge of the Contest Office.
The Contest Office is a large and critical job that does the following:
-prepares all of the judging/scoring sheets
-processes all scoring sheets on the day of contest
-sorts medals and sheets into boxes for each school
-posts scores throughout the day
-is the “hub” of the entire day
We cannot run this alone and need your help! The Contest Office will need 4-6 adults on hand at all times from 8-5 PM on Saturday, February 23. We are looking to create shifts so that we may rotate volunteers and lessen the impact on just a few people. We would be very grateful for your help in staffing the Contest Office.
