Important December Reminders
Seasons Greetings, Gregory Chorus Families!
December is a busy month for our young musicians. Here are some reminders and updates that are important to be aware of…
· Practice tracks for students in Concert Choir, Men’s Ensemble, and Mixed Vocal Ensemble are on the chorus website, under the “Practice Tracks” tab at the top of the page. Please be sure you are practicing regularly at home (a minimum of 15 minutes per ensemble) and working on being fully memorized on all repertoire heading into our final set of rehearsals!
· Extracurricular rehearsals for the month of December:
Concert Choir – M 12/3; Th 12/6; M 12/10 (all before school);
Men’s Ensemble – W 12/5; Tu 12/11 (all after school);
Mixed Vocal Ensemble – Tu 12/4 (after school; changed from before school due to STARS Breakfast event); Th 12/13 (after school).
There will be no extracurricular rehearsals the week of 12/17. In addition, be aware that all after-school ensemble rehearsals for chorus end at 4:00; parents, please make sure all singers have a ride home promptly at 4:00. Thank you for your attention to this!
· Triptych Concert performance schedule:
Concert Choir – Wednesday, December 12, 7:00pm (students report to the Chorus Room at 6:15pm);
6th Grade Chorus & Mixed Vocal Ensemble – Monday, December 17, 12:45pm;
6th Grade Chorus & Men’s Ensemble – Monday, December 17, 2:00pm;
7th Grade Chorus – Monday, December 17, 6:30pm (students report to the West Gym at 5:45pm);
8th Grade Chorus – Monday, December 17, 8:00pm (students report to the West Gym at 7:15pm).
Note: Men’s & Mixed Vocal Ensembles are performing at the 6th Grade Triptych concerts; this differs from the original calendar at the beginning of the year. All five Triptych performances will be streamed online; information about this streaming with links to each concert will be distributed at a later date.
Attire for every Triptych performance is nice, dress clothing (no Gregory music polo). Please no jeans, gym shoes, etc. Bright, festive colors are encouraged!
· We will be looking for poinsettia donations to decorate the gym for our Triptych concerts. Information will be sent home as we approach the concerts. Thank you in advance for your contributions!
· Special reminders for our 6th Grade singers…
o Thank you to everyone who has brought in a flashlight for our special Triptych performance. If you have not already done so, please bring one in on Monday, December 3.
o If any of you are still interested in being mentored by one of our 8th grade MOD (Musician of Distinction) students, please fill out the form on Google Classroom no later than Monday, December 3.

***7th Grade Chorus and 8th Grade Chorus report to the West Gym at 7:15pm; Men’s/Mixed/Concert Choir students not in 7th or 8th Grade Chorus should report to the chorus room between concerts, and have a quiet task (homework, personal reading) to work on.
Attire is the gray "Gregory Music" polo shirt, black dress pants (no jeans/denim, leggings, capris, shorts, or skirts), black dress shoes (no gym shoes), and black socks. Points will be deducted for incorrect or inappropriate concert attire.
Students are required to stay for the duration of their assigned concert (each concert will be approximately 45-50 minutes). Students in Men's Ensemble, Mixed Vocal Ensemble, and Concert Choir are required to perform at both concerts.
8th Grade Musicians of Distinction (MODs)…if you are able to help with setup, please report to the East Gym at 5:00pm.
Parents…we are also in need of some pre-concert supervision prior to both concerts. If you are interested in being an extra set of eyes in the West Gym or chorus room, please email Mr. Pfenninger and let him know for which supervision (5:30-6:00pm or 7:15-7:45pm) you would be able to assist. Thank you!
Also, with the first quarter ending this Friday, please check your current chorus grade in HAC; if you are still missing any assignments, please submit them ASAP. Forms can be found in the “Class Documents” tab of the chorus website if you misplaced any originals. Finally, even though the concert is on Monday, the performance credits and the post-concert reflection assignment will be entered as first quarter grades, so it is important that students complete the post-concert reflection assignment in class or at home on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week at the latest. Assignment details will be posted on Google Classroom the morning after the concert.

Music Department Fundraiser
The Gregory Middle School Music Department is pleased to announce our Fall Fundraiser. This year we are offering a catalog from Club’s Choice that features quality gourmet cookie dough, desserts, breads, soups, appetizers, and other food items. We hope you will appreciate the convenience of catalog shopping and help support our band, orchestra, and chorus students.
The money raised from our annual fundraiser helps to defray the cost of summer music camp for many students each year. We are able to bring in professional musicians to Gregory for master classes, recitals, and performances. In addition, we are able to purchase special instruments and musical equipment that enhance our performances throughout the year. We hope that you will find items in the catalog that may be a treat for your friends or family.
Please know that you are under no obligation to order from Club’s Choice. The Gregory Music Department would gratefully accept donations if you choose to do so. Direct donations to the department further help our goals of providing additional curricular opportunities and equipment purchases, such as music composition and/or practice software for each band/orchestra/chorus student, as well as expedite larger and more long-term purchase goals such as digital recording systems and more capable sound systems for our music classrooms and performance spaces.
If you would like to make a direct donation in lieu of or in addition to ordering from the Club’s Choice catalog, please fill out the form at the bottom of the letter linked here, detach, and include with your check (no cash, please) made payable to Gregory Middle School Music in a sealed envelope. You may return the envelope to Gregory any time prior to or on Tuesday, October 2.
Students will be bringing home a packet of fundraiser materials starting today. All orders must be returned with customer payments by Tuesday, October 2; no late forms will be accepted after 3:00pm that day, so please plan accordingly. Also, be sure that all customer orders and payments are double-checked for accuracy, and sealed in the large white fundraiser envelope. Checks should be made payable to Gregory MS Music. Items will be delivered to Gregory on Thursday, November 1, and are available for pickup between 3:00-7:00pm.

Extracurricular Singing Opportunities
In addition to our daily grade-level choirs that meet during the school day, we offer a wide variety of extracurricular singing groups and events at Gregory that rehearse outside of the school day. Sign-ups for many of these are occurring over the next few weeks, so I wanted to make sure that everyone was aware of each offering. Students are strongly encouraged to pursue one or more of these ensembles as an enhancement to and extension of what is learned in chorus class.
· Concert Choir, Gregory’s honors-level auditioned treble-voice choir, will be holding auditions Wednesday, September 12 and Thursday, September 13, after school. All treble-voiced students (girls and unchanged boys) are encouraged to try out! Sign-ups for a 4-minute audition timeslot are posted in the chorus room, but will fill up quickly, so interested students are encouraged to find a time as soon as possible. Students will also need to bring in a signed permission slip/participation contract (see attached form) prior to their audition – students will NOT be allowed to audition without the form signed by a parent/guardian. The first rehearsal will be on Monday, September 17, from 6:55-7:45am. For more information about Concert Choir and the rehearsal schedule, see the information posted further below.
· Men’s Ensemble, Gregory’s premier all-male vocal group, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, September 18, from 3:10-4:00pm. No audition is required, and all boys at Gregory (including those not in chorus) are encouraged to check it out! Interested students should sign up in the Chorus Room and return a permission slip/participation contract (see attached form). For more information about Men’s Ensemble and the rehearsal schedule, see the information posted further below.
· Mixed Vocal Ensemble, Gregory's pop ensemble, will begin rehearsals on Wednesday, September 19, from 3:10-4:00pm. For more information about Mixed Vocal Ensemble and the rehearsal schedule, see the information posted further below

Each school participating in the festival is limited to nominating only 8 students from each voice part (soprano, alto, and baritone) for the audition process, so interested students should turn their permission slips in as soon as possible prior to September 7 to guarantee their audition place; placement for Gregory’s audition slots are on a first come first serve basis. This is a HIGHLY recommended event for our 7th and 8th grade students...please consider auditioning and taking part in this terrific festival.

Repertoire consists of advanced middle school and high school level music from a wide variety of genres and cultures. The group rehearses twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays before the school day (6:55-7:45am), and performs at various additional events throughout the school year (see the Gregory Chorus events calendar handed out in class for the additional Concert Choir performance dates).
Men’s Ensemble is a non-auditioned group open to male singers (changed and unchanged voices) at Gregory. The ensemble’s one weekly rehearsal alternates on a week-to-week basis between Tuesdays and Wednesdays after school (3:10-4:00pm). Rehearsals focus on the special needs of the changing male voice, and students have fun performing a challenging but entertaining repertoire of music from a wide variety of genres.
Mixed Vocal Ensemble is Gregory's co-ed extracurricular ensemble. The goal of the group is to provide an outlet to students in Concert Choir or Men’s Ensemble who wish to pursue an additional, more pop-oriented co-ed performance opportunity. Repertoire will consist of contemporary and classic pop songs, Broadway medleys, show choir selections, jazz standards, and holiday carols, amongst others. The ensemble will rehearse once a week on an alternating schedule with Men’s Ensemble – Wednesdays after school (3:10-4:00pm), then Tuesdays before school (6:55-7:45am). Interested students must be members of either Concert Choir or Men’s Ensemble in order to participate.
The ILMEA (Illinois Music Educators Association) Music Festival is an additional opportunity for seventh and eighth grade students. The festival is a single daylong activity on Saturday, November 10 in which students work with a special guest clinician in a large choir of over 200 of the best singers from the western Chicago suburbs. At the end of the day, a concert is performed for parents, friends, and teachers. Auditions will be held at Yorkville Middle School in Yorkville on Saturday, September 29. Help sessions to learn the audition material will occur in September, one day per week after school; for students who are selected to the choir, help sessions to learn the festival performance set will occur in October, one day per week after school. This is a HIGHLY recommended event for our 7th and 8th grade students...please consider auditioning and taking part in this terrific festival.

Welcome to Gregory Chorus 2018-19!
Welcome to the Gregory Middle School Choral Department! The chorus offerings here are a significant part of our school curriculum and will enhance your middle school experience greatly. The chorus program is designed to help each singer improve their own vocal skills, expand their musical understanding, and increase their personal growth through working together daily and in performances.
It is the goal for each chorus student to:
1. Discover, appreciate and value his/her own talents, the talents of
others and the beauty of all types of music.
2. Improve skills in using his/her vocal instrument, learning music
theory and reading skills, and general musical knowledge.
3. Gain a desire to continually improve upon past performances.
4. Experience self-fulfillment after having communicated to others
through music.
5. Experience music in a way that will bring lasting enjoyment and as
an activity that can be continued long after leaving GMS.
In addition to all of these goals, we also love to have fun together in chorus! Of course, it is expected that every student give his or her best effort and cooperation. With all of us working together, it will be an exciting, inspiring, and rewarding year!
In chorus class, students were given two important informational forms: a list of chorus events for the year and a uniform contract. Please review the information contained within both forms, sign as needed, and return the bottom portions by the listed due dates. In addition, students will be required to have the following class materials in place by Wednesday, September 5: a two-pocket folder, approximately 20 sheets of loose-leaf paper, and at least one sharpened #2 pencil.
Finally, if you have not already done so, please bookmark the Gregory Chorus website; this will be the main portal for disseminating important information, announcements, reminders, and class resources throughout the school year.

Awesome Musical!
Congratulations to the cast, chorus, and tech crew on a fantastic set of performances of Willy Wonka Junior last week. Everyone stepped up and delivered their “A” game, and many in the audience commented that it was our best show yet. Way to go to all who gave their energy and commitment to our musical over the last two months…it was further evidence of the amazing students we have here at Gregory!

District 204 Fine Arts Festival - Saturday, May 19
The school year will be wrapping up in a big way with the 2018 District 204 Fine Arts Festival, which will take place on Saturday, May 19 at the Neuqua Valley High School main campus. We are excited to be performing with the other choral musicians at Crone MS and Neuqua Valley HS! As communicated at the beginning of the school year, this is a required curricular performance for the members of our grade-level choirs at Gregory. The following choral groups are scheduled to perform:
6th Grade Chorus (performing with the Crone 6th Grade Chorus & the Neuqua Treble Chorus) – 9:00-9:20am; students are to report to the Neuqua orchestra room no later than 7:55am for warm-up and rehearsal.
7th Grade Chorus (performing with the Crone 7th Grade Chorus & the Neuqua Varsity Singers) – 10:20-10:40am; students are to report to the Neuqua orchestra room no later than 9:15am for warm-up and rehearsal.
8th Grade Chorus (performing with the Crone 8th Grade Chorus & the Neuqua World Voices) – 3:40-4:00pm; students are to report to the Neuqua orchestra room no later than 2:35pm for warm-up and rehearsal.

Willy Wonka Jr. Audition Tracks
To all students auditioning for the Gregory musical, Willy Wonka Jr...
If you have not already done so, please pick up an audition packet and audition song excerpt in the main office or in the chorus room, and return the included permission slip prior to your audition. You may not audition unless you have properly completed and turned in a signed permission slip.
Also, please click here to access a practice track and a PDF for the audition song excerpt. All students auditioning will learn this song at the beginning of each audition day, and will sing this for Mr. Pfenninger as the vocal part of the audition (the acting/speaking part of the audition will be for Mrs. Battle, and is already located in the printed audition packet). If you have not already done so, please pick up an audition packet and audition song excerpt in the main office or in the chorus room, and return the included permission slip prior to your audition. You may not audition unless you have properly completed and turned in a signed permission slip.
Also, please click here to access a practice track and a PDF for the audition song excerpt. All students auditioning will learn this song at the beginning of each audition day, and will sing this for Mr. Pfenninger as the vocal part of the audition (the acting/speaking part of the audition will be for Mrs. Battle, and is already located in the printed audition packet). No other song is necessary to prepare.

Great Concerts!
Congratulations to all Gregory chorus students on a terrific set of winter choral concerts. You stepped up and delivered top notch performances, and our audience members appreciated your efforts and enthusiasm. Way to go, singers!

Winter Choral Concerts - Monday, February 26
The Winter Choral Concerts will take place on Monday, February 26, in the Gregory East Gym. The following is the schedule for the evening:
6:30pm concert - 6th Grade Chorus, Men's Ensemble, Mixed Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir; Concert Choir & Men's Ensemble students need to report to the West Gym by 5:30pm, 6th Grade Chorus students need to report to the West Gym by 6:00pm.
8:00pm concert - 7th Grade Chorus, 8th Grade Chorus, Men's Ensemble, Mixed Vocal Ensemble, Concert Choir; all groups need to report to the West Gym by 7:15pm (students performing in the first concert will report at the conclusion of the performance). Students who are NOT in 7th or 8th Grade Chorus but are performing in this second concert will report to the Chorus Room; please bring something to work on (homework, personal reading).
Attire for performers is the gray Gregory Music polo shirt, black dress pants (no capris, leggings, skirts, jeans, etc.), black socks, and black dress shoes. Points will be deducted for students not wearing the correct concert attire, so please be sure to be dressed appropriately.
